Map Skills Ideas for Elementary

National Geographic has a set of free “spatial thinking” activity ideas for Preschool through 6th grade.

The collection of lessons are divided into 3 groups:

  • Preschool and 1st grade (6 activities)
  • 2nd to 4th grades (12 activities)
  • 5th and 6th grades (9 activities)

PreK to 1 features such projects as Mapping the Classroom, Mapping Storybooks, and Places in the Park.

2nd to 4th grades features lessons like Measuring Distances on a Map, Create a Weather Map, and Mapping U.S. Watersheds.

5th and 6th grade activities include Mental Mapping and Perception, Mapping a London Epidemic, and Comparing Historical Maps.

There is some overlap of activities, with a few being found in more than one age group.

All activities are well documented and include Directions, Objectives, Preparation, and Background & Vocabulary sections.
