Story Starters game
Scholastic has a quick, easy, and fun way to get kids in grades K-6 writing! It’s an online game and writing tool called Story Starters. Simply choose a story type — Adventure, Fantasy, Sci-Fi, or “Scrambler” — then type in your first name and select your grade (K-1st, 2nd, 3rd, or 4-6th), and the fun begins!
Next you’ll be taken to a screen where you can click “Spin” to get a randomly chosen creative writing assignment, then fine-tune it by spinning only one wheel at a time (see above pic). Once you are satisfied with the prompt you’re given, click Next, and choose a format for your writing — a postcard, notebook, newspaper, or letter — with or without a drawing. You can do your writing and drawing right on the computer, and print it out when you’re done.
The Story Starters site also has a Teacher’s Guide that explains several ideas for using the Story Starters activity. It also has links to 2 printable worksheets — a Story Map and a Setting Comparison (see pics below).
